However, amidst the pandemic and the upcoming election, many of us may not be feeling very thankful or grateful. How do we cultivate a spirit of gratitude when we may not be completely satisfied with what is going on in our lives? Can we truly be thankful if our 2020 has thus far not been especially kind to us or fruitful? We sure can. Thankfulness, like any other attitude or emotion, is a choice. And just like character and confidence, the more you exercise your gratitude muscle, the stronger it becomes. As hard as it is, I ask you to push through and adopt an attitude of gratitude! Despite everything, we are still here, and the Detroit Deltas continue to make a huge impact on our community! I am grateful for life, health, and strength! I am grateful for each of you, my beautiful chapter members. And even though things aren’t like I want them to be, I still have many things to be grateful for. Here are three ways to get your heart centered and ready to overflow with thanksgiving this month: 1. Focus on what you have, not what you need. We spend so much time asking God and others to meet our needs. But it’s important that we first recognize just how blessed we truly are. Like the child who always wants a new toy, we often forget to assess what’s already in our toybox. Bring what you have to the forefront of the gratitude table and watch your plate overflow. 2. Be present. Are we thankful for our needs being met on a daily basis? Or are we too busy stressing over our weekly, monthly or even retirement bread? Yes, I’m all about planning ahead, but we must first pause each and every day and give thanks for our immediate gifts and blessings. Worrying about our future needs and whether they’ll be met is one of the most unproductive and joy stealing things we do. Yet it seems to occupy so much of our thoughts. Just for today – or perhaps just for the moment – be fully aware and satisfied with your life just as it is. Then tomorrow, do the exact same thing. Before you know it, you’ll be living in a daily and constant state of gratitude 3. Keep a gratitude journal or speak aloud your gratitude. At the close of each day, take five to 10 minutes and jot down or say out loud a handful of ways your needs were met. So often we miss identifying the multiple ways and times life unfolds before us to meet our needs. Pay attention to these slight but powerful acts of fulfillment. It’ll change your perspective on how much is working for you and blow your sense of gratitude sky high. Have a blessed month my sorors! Yours in service, Larmender A. Test it monthly, keep it free of dust and replace the battery at least once a year. CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR: A carbon monoxide detector is essential to have in every home. Many homeowners falsely believe that these detectors are only necessary in houses with fuel-burning appliances. However, carbon monoxide (CO) can be present in many situations. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly in large amounts. Carbon monoxide originates from many sources, including:Wood stoves.Fireplaces.Oil, propane or natural gas appliances.Furnaces.Space Heaters.Gas and diesel sources, like cars and generators. ALTERNATIVE HEATERS: Portable heaters need their space. Keep anything combustible at least three feet away. Keep fire in the fireplace, use fire screens and have your chimney cleaned annually. The creosote buildup can ignite a chimney fire that could easily spread. COVID/HEALTH SAFETY TIPS: Wear a mask Practice social distancing – 6 feet Cover coughs and sneezes Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. Monitor your health daily: be alert for symptoms, take your temperature Information reference: AARP/Home Safety, CDC ERT Committee Deborah J. Soror Robyn Hughes Midwest Arts & Letters Coordinator ![]() MONTHLY MEDITATION – FREEDOM There is absolutely no question about it; God does not want us in bondage to anything, but to be free, no matter where on earth we live or what government we live under. Seeking FREEDOM as a child of God is a learned art. Unlike learning a trade or skill, we must constantly practice FREEDOM from care and want, insuring continued acclimation of FREEDOM in our Christian walk. Instead of having a completed picture or sculpture we have FREEDOM to a life journey of joy and love. Step one: Begin by spending time with God: not only reading the Bible but just sitting and meditating on how great God is. Sit and think about God, as God. God is that unseen but deeply felt JOY in you. That peace that passes all understanding. Close your eyes and Just imagine that you are resting in the hands of God. We must allow ourselves the luxury of standing still and knowing God. As God spoke to Job (Job 38) In our getting up and going down he is there as creator, completer and designer of everything. Step two: Do not let fear control you. God desires that you trust HIM enough to just rest in his hands. Allow yourself to breathe and know you are safe and loved. Release your fears and just breathe a FREE breath. Allow God to take the heavy weight of the world from you. Do not be afraid. God is ready willing and able. Look upon the world with new eyes. Walk into any situation with positive strength and a God that goes before you and surrounds you. We are heirs of the king which makes us powerful beyond belief. Walk in your power today. FREE IN GOD!! Step three: Practice! Practice! Practice! and more practice until you are truly able to be FREE and know God is the strength of Your life, not only an ever-present help in times of need but ever present in our lives. He will carry you, love and protect you. Practice FREEDOM every day, every minute, every second, every nano second. This FREEDOM walk is a life journey and not a walk around the block. The final step: Live like you are a child of God, smile often, embrace joy, share your love with others. Teach them through your living how if feels to be FREE in the Love of God. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bonds of peace Ephesians 4:3 Soror Nora Hudson, Midwest Region Chaplain’s Council – Detroit Alumnae Chapter Sarahjini Nunn Spencer Midwest Regional Director Jamiya Smith Midwest Regional Representative www.dstmidwestregion.com REPEATED INFORMATION DAC WAYS AND MEANS ![]() THE DAC DELTA SHOPPE IS BACK !!!* NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS * Introducing our new Social Action shirt!
