Community Outreach Committee Janeal Garry, Chair Lakia Wilson and Britnee English, Co-Chairs SOCIAL ACTION The Social Action Committee is meeting this week, Thursday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. JOIN ZOOM MEETING Meeting ID 939 5730 0663 Passcode SA21# We will detail our upcoming programs focusing on: Redistricting and the Michigan Independent Redistricting Commission as well as Michigan’s new expungement laws. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ THREE IMPORTANT THINGS FOR THIS WEEK ONE The 32nd Annual Delta Days at the Nation’s Capital To be held virtually, April 24 & 25 The registration fee will be $50 for alumnae chapter members, but the registration date has not been announced. It is also unclear whether we will be asked to support Destination 22 for our collegiate sorors, who will participate in their DDNC earlier, on April 17. This year presents a unique opportunity for sorors to participate at a lower cost and without the hassle and safety concerns of traveling. Please save the dates and we’ll have more information to follow soon. TWO We hope sorors were able to attend the Social Action Commission’s Redistricting 101 webinar last Wednesday. Our committee has begun efforts to focus on redistricting in the state of Michigan and we invite all sorors to join us. We need sorors to assist in observing the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission meetings; assisting planning and implementing virtual community forums; coordinating with subject matter experts regarding “drawing lines” or creating maps for the Congressional and state legislative offices; and helping us to spread the important word that redistricting matters to African-Americans, to people of color, and to Detroiters, why it is important and what role they can and should play. If you are interested in helping with this effort, please email us at socialaction@detroitdeltas.org to let us know what you are interested in participating in. THREE Our committee has resumed working on Criminal Justice Reform, specifically related to expungements and returning citizen advocacy. Gov. Whitmer signed bills into law that go into effect on April 1. They expand the opportunity for expungement to nearly 80,000 Detroiters. If you would like to work on expungement educational forums, please send an email to socialaction@detroitdeltas.org or contact Andrea Cartwright, our co-chair and the lead for expungement efforts, or Donyale Stephen-Atara, chair. ~ ~ ~ ~ THE NAACP CORNER You can still view this forum on the Detroit Branch NAACP’s Facebook page. During the forum, it was noted that many businesses of color have not applied and there are still funds available. First Independence Bank is willing to assist businesses get the necessary information to apply. The deadline is March 31.
